The Core of Corn

About

Here's the original Core of Corn book! (Finished, no chapters) I had to write a book as an assignment for school, and at the time this story was already buzzing around in my head anyway, so I just decided to do that!
You can read the comic version (that I'm currently working on) here!

Quinn was laying on a lounging chair, relaxing in the sun, when Kira burst in through the door.
"Guess what I got?" She shouted, a million shopping bags hanging from her arms.
Quinn turned around and lifted up their sunglasses. They saw the shopping bags and sighed.
"Seriously?"
Kira immediately protested. "I know what you're gonna say, but just check this out!"
She suddenly turned one of the bags upside down, dumping a ton of hats out. Quinn watched, exasperated as they all fell to the ground.
Kira picked one of them up and held it up to Quinn's face. It's a top hat with a frog pin on it.
"Isn't that awesome?!" Kira exclaims excitedly.
Quinn doesn't match her energy. They turn around and put their sunglasses back on, waving her off.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever."
Kira picks up all of her hats and walks off, not saying another word.
The next day, Quinn was sort of irritated. They were still upset about the hat thing. This wasn't the first time
Kira had done this. It happened four times in a row! It was like an addiction. Quinn was sick of it.
Of course, she would probably do the same thing again with another thing next month. Quinn was her best friend, they knew her.
Then Quinn realized something. It's...kind of quiet. Kira's usually loud in the morning. It didn't take long for them to figure out that Kira wasn't in the house.
Quinn stood there, doing nothing. They felt slightly relieved with Kira gone. They kind of...didn't care where Kira was. They shook their head, dismissing it.
"What am I thinking? I have to find Kira!" They said to themself out loud.
Then they froze. "But...no more hat shopping sprees...no more loud shouting...."
They slapped their cheeks repeatedly. "No, no, no! Stop thinking this! It'll be fine. I'll find her, and it'll be fine!"
For the next five minutes, Kira paced around the living room, like they were procrastinating on finding their best friend.
As they turned around to pace again, they caught a glimpse of something on the floor. They crouched down to get a better look. They picked it up and sniffed it.
It's...corn? It blended in with the floor, but they could see a whole trail of corn.
"Okay, that's weird, but maybe I can find Kira with this." They said to themself.
The trail of corn was long enough to go outside, leading to a tunnel in the backyard. Quinn had no idea this even existed.
The tunnel was small, but big enough for them to crawl through. Quinn quickly grabbed their sword from her room and ran back.
As they went through the tunnel, it got bigger and bigger, letting them stand up eventually. There were multiple doors they had to go through, each one having a monster to fight behind it.
And the further they went, the hotter it got. By the last door, they could feel sweat dripping grossly down their body. It was like their face was melting off. They opened the door.
Inside was a room—if you could even call it that—with a brownish red colored ground, Quinn's feet slightly
sinking into it as they stood. Weirdly, there were corn cobs placed randomly around, and a giant pile of some sort of green plant.
There were pools of lava everywhere, like it was a hot spring. (Pun intended)
On a tall hill, there was a man with Kira, standing there and talking to her.
They were holding hands together and the man was smiling, but Kira looked uncomfortable. Quinn's eyes widened.
"Hey!!" Quinn shouted assertively.
The man turned his head and his grin widened when he saw Quinn.
"Oh, you're finally here!" He said cheerfully. He pushed Kira off the hill, sending her tumbling down into the pile of green plants.
"Oof—!" She exclaimed as landed with a soft thud. The man started walking down the hill and up to Quinn.
Quinn lifted their sword up, keeping their guard. They scowled at him as he walked casually.
He looked odd, not like a human. He had a human body and limbs, but his skin was vibrant yellow, his hair green and the same texture of the plant pile, and he had bumps all over skin, but it didn't look like acne or freckles.
Quinn raised their voice, still standing still but firm.
"Who are you?" They shouted.
The man spread out his arms, like he was presenting himself.
"I am Corn Man."
Quinn blinks. Okay, well that explains all the corn.
"I assume you found my corn trail?" He added.
"What do you want?" Quinn yelled, getting straight to the point.
"I wanted to fight you."
"Fight me? Why?"
Corn Man pointed at Kira, who was still sitting in the plant pile. "For her."
Quinn lowered their sword a little. "You wanna...fight me...for Kira?"
Corn Man nodded. "Yup. I've been watching you two for a while, and Kira seems perfect for me."
Corn Man turned back to Quinn. "Since she's your best friend and all, I thought it would only be fair if you fight me for her."
He then steps back, holding his arm out to the right. In his hand forms a scythe, made of some pale yellow stuff.
Quinn lifts up their sword, getting ready.
"I'm glad you brought your sword." Corn Man says as he holds up his yellow scythe. "Otherwise...you wouldn't stand a chance."
Corn Man charges at Quinn, swinging his scythe at them. Quinn blocks it with their sword. They slash at each other, dodging and trying to hit each other.
Kira watches from afar, amused. This goes on for a while until Quinn manages to cut Corn Man. He stumbles back in surprise, but it doesn't hurt him much.
Suddenly, the place starts to rumble. A few rocks fall down. They look around the place nervously. Now's my chance, Quinn thought.
They dash over to Kira and pick her up. Giant rocks start falling, and they know they have to get out of there
fast. The whole place is crumbling, and they dodge the rocks that fall in their way. They head to the door. The rocks fall loudly, splashing in the lava pools.
Some of the lava gets on Quinn, but they don't stop moving. They finally reach the door and touch the doorknob. They look back—and sees Corn Man is crushed by a rock.
They open the door and slam it closed when they gets out. Quinn puts Kira down.
They stand there together, catching a breath. Kira and Quinn look at each other.
Finally, Quinn takes Kira's hand and they head back out of the tunnel together.
The next day, Kira told Quinn all about what happened. She explained on the couch while Quinn was sipping tea.
"And then he was all like—"I love you so much, I'm gonna marry you!"
Quinn doesn't react to that.
Kira starts to talk more, but Quinn cuts her off. "Hey, Kira?"
Kira sits up straighter. "Mhm?"
Quinn pauses before they sigh and say, "Don't buy anymore hats, okay?"
Kira nods enthusiastically. "Yeah, I won't! I promise!"
They sit together in silence. Then Kira adds, "Okay, maybe I'll buy just one more hat."
Quinn chuckles softly and says, "Okay, okay, one is fine."
